Iowa City Police have taken an alleged armed man into custody who had been holed up in a house overnight.

In a news release from the department, they were called at approximately 10:11pm Wednesday for reports of an armed suspect in the 800 block of East Fairchild Street.

A resident there reported that an adult male houseguest threatened a man and woman with a handgun after a dispute. The two fled the scene and called 911.

Police arrived and were joined by the Crisis Negotiations Team, who continued to communicate with the man throughout the night.

Residents reported a large police presence with guns drawn in the area, and Thursday morning the city sent out a release advising the public to avoid the area.

At 8:41 this morning, another release was issued saying the suspect was taken into custody without incident.

The investigation is ongoing, and information on criminal charges is not available at this time.

Authorities gave the all clear for the public to return to the area.
