ICPD identifies man arrested after standoff

Iowa City Police have identified the man involved in an overnight standoff.

34-year-old James Joy III was booked into the Johnson County Jail just after 11am Thursday. Joy was taken into custody after an incident of East Fairchild Street.

The ICPD investigation found that on Wednesday at approximately 10:10pm Joy refused to leave a residence after being told to do so. Joy became upset and removed a handgun from his waistband, pointed it a male resident and said “I’ll blow you.”

Joy then held the gun to the head of a female victim. Both victims were able to flee the residence and call police. Joy then barricaded himself in the residence for several hours while the Iowa City Police Crisis Negotiations Team was on scene.

Joy walked out of the residence at approximately 8:15 Thursday morning without incident and was taken into custody. A search of the residence located a BB gun that matched the description of the gun the victims had described. The BB gun and magazines were hidden in separate locations in the residence.

Joy is charged with 2nd Degree Burglary, a Class C Felony punishable by a maximum of ten years in prison.
