An Iowa City man faces charges that he kicked his pregnant girlfriend in the stomach.

Iowa City Police were called to a domestic disturbance on Fairchild Street just before 2pm Friday. The alleged victim told investigators that 40-year-old Lavail Drain, who lives at a different Fairchild Street residence, was upset because she was taking too long at the store before returning home to watch the couple’s five children. All the children are age six and under.

An argument ensued, and Drain allegedly kicked the woman in the stomach knowing she was three months pregnant. Drain denied that his girlfriend was pregnant.

The two have been an on-and-off couple for 18 years.

Drain, who is already on probation for a domestic abuse conviction, is now charged with Domestic Abuse Assault – 3rd or Subsequent Offense. If convicted, he faces a maximum of five years in prison.

Drain made news on Christmas Eve of 2017 when he invited police into his then-North Summit Street home to investigate a trespassing complaint. The investigating officers noticed what appeared to be cocaine residue on a coffee table, and a subsequent search of Drain’s person tuned up a plastic bag with ten individual rocks of crack cocaine, a large crack rock, ecstasy, and other drugs for which Drain did not have a prescription. He eventually pleaded guilty to a Drug Tax Stamp violation.
