Allegedly stealing two cars in separate incidents has led to the arrest of an Iowa City woman.

According to arrest records, 25-year-old Mercedes Hadnot of Benton Drive borrowed the first victim’s 2004 F-150 truck on July 23rd. She promised to return the truck the next day, but on July 25th the owner reported to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office that it had not been returned, and Hadnot would not answer his phone calls or texts.

The car was found in the Cole’s manufactured housing community of South Riverside Drive in the late-night hours of July 26th, but Hadnot allegedly kept a set of keys. She returned to the truck owner’s residence the next day to obtain items from the truck, but left with the keys before officers could arrive.

On the afternoon of August 3rd Hadnot allegedly took a 2017 Honda Fit from Cactus 2 on East Burlington Street. She told Iowa City Police she would return the vehicle by August 12th. Police told her if she didn’t, she would be arrested and charged. Hadnot allegedly failed to return calls from police after failing to return the vehicle.

Hadnot is also accused of stealing over $200 in phone chargers and charging ports from the Kansas Avenue Kum & Go in North Liberty on July 29th.

Hadnot, who also goes by the alias “Mercedes Mahoney”, is charged with two counts of Operating a Vehicle Without Owners Consent and one count of 5th Degree Theft. If convicted on all charges, she faces a maximum of over four years in prison.
