It’s been decades since downtown Iowa City hosted a department store, but a well-known franchise is now considering a new downtown location.

City Manager Geoff Fruin told The Cedar Rapids Gazette that Target is considering what it calls a “small format store” in the 100 block of East Washington Street.

Target has about 100 similar smaller stores in other cities across the country, including several in college towns. The stores are about a third of the size of a normal Target, averaging about 40,000 square feet.

The location Target is considering includes 111-117 and 119-123 East Washington Street, across from Bo James. The property is currently owned by Joe Clark and Kevin Monson, who purchased it from Midwest One Bank earlier this year.

Target asked the city to convert four metered spots into a loading zone, which was approved by the city council on August 20th. To keep the amount of downtown parking the same, metered spots are being added to the corner of Dubuque and Washington Streets.

A lease for the new space should be signed in the coming weeks.
