IC man accused of strangling and stabbing girlfriend

An Iowa City man is in custody for an August incident involving his on-again, off-again girlfriend.

According to police, 35-year-old Bryant Welch was at the woman’s residence in the 2400 block of Whispering Meadow Drive the morning of August 30th when she went to get some food from her refrigerator. Welch allegedly grabbed a knife from her knife block and stabbed her behind her left ear, and told her “I told you if you cheat on me, I’d kill you.”

The woman’s minor daughter came into the kitchen to check on her mother, and Welch reportedly approached the daughter while still holding the knife after she refused to leave the room.

The two left the residence in the woman’s vehicle as the incident continued.

Welch is accused of continuing to strangle the woman multiple times, causing her to fear for her life. He also reportedly took the woman’s IPhone with him when they stopped.

The woman says she was bitten by Welch twice, strangled, and stabbed twice.

Welch has two previous convictions for domestic abuse in Illinois and Indiana.

Welch was picked up and booked into the Johnson County Jail Sunday afternoon and charged with Domestic Abuse Assault third or subsequent, Willful Injury causing Bodily Injury, Domestic Abuse Assault restricting airflow, Child Endangerment and 5th Degree Theft. If convicted on all charges, Welch could be sentenced to over seventeen years in prison.

A no-contact order was requested between Welch and the woman and woman’s daughter.
