A Coralville woman has been charged after cashing forged payroll checks in May.

According to authorities, 22-year-old Sarah Franz of Muddy Creek Lane presented a payroll check on the account of Cedar Rapids company Cedar-Mac for $1038.84 at the Veridian Credit Union on the Coralville Strip May 15th. She deposited the check into her account and withdrew $1035 of it at the time.

The check was returned as forgery.

The next day, Franz is accused of going to the same bank and depositing a payroll check on the account of Hamburg Inn #2 for $989.72 and withdrawing $989 of it. That check, too, was returned to Veridian as “Altered or Fictitious.”

Franz was identified and admitted to presenting and cashing the checks at the direction of a co-defendant, knowing that the checks were bogus.

A warrant was issued for her arrest and Franz was booked into the Johnson County Jail Monday morning. She’s been charged with two counts of Forgery, and could be sentenced to a maximum of ten years in prison if convicted.
