A transient has been arrested after he stole a knife on his birthday for what he claims was his own survival.
Iowa City Police were called to Orscheln on Hollywood Boulevard just after 1pm Tuesday for a shoplifter who had concealed a Gerber pocketknife in his pants and attempted to leave the store. Police say Mark Staley, who was celebrating his 55th birthday, had removed the packaging and claimed he was stealing the knife “for survival”. He has two previous theft convictions.
Staley is charged with 3rd Degree Theft, an aggravated misdemeanor punishable by a maximum of two years in prison.
