Iowa City Police say a van that hit an Iowa City Community Schools student was owned by the district itself.

The hit-and-run accident occurred just after 3pm Tuesday at the intersection of Governor and Burlington Streets. A 12-year-old student was crossing the street when he was struck by a white van that was westbound on Burlington, turning north on Governor. The van’s driver stopped until the child got to his feet with assistance from an unknown witness, then continued northbound on Governor.

Police have since told KCRG TV-9 that the van was owned by the district, was being driven by a district employee, and was transporting students home at the time of the accident. There was one child in the van at the time of the accident.

Officers informed district officials on Wednesday that they believed one of their vehicles was involved. Police say the district has been cooperating in the investigation.

School officials told KCRG the driver has been put on administrative leave as the investigation continues.

The boy who was hit was uninjured and has since returned to school.
