A Coralville man has been arrested after allegedly trying to break into the Old Capitol.

A tripped burglar alarm sent University of Iowa Police to the Old Capitol just before 8:15 Tuesday night. Police say video footage shows 29-year-old Alexander Torres of 10th Street Court trying to enter the south entrance to the building. Investigators found a small hammer at the scene, and say Torres managed to remove a door hinge and was in the process of removing two more hinges.

Torres claimed he was trying to take control of the building and steal documents inside. He’s charged with Attempted 3rd Degree Burglary, Possession of Burglar’s Tools and 5th Degree Criminal Mischief. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of over four years in prison.
