A Muscatine woman faces charges that she broke into a home near Lone Tree, then escaped from the back of a sheriff’s patrol car while in custody.

Johnson County deputies were called to 5488 Highway 22 Southeast just after 12:45am on September 10th for a possible burglary. Arriving officers found 31-year-old Marisela Valle of East 6th Street leaving the residence. Valle admitted the house was not hers, and claimed that her sister was still inside.

The homeowner’s son and caretaker of the property told investigators that Valle had no permission to be on the property. She was found in possession of return address labels and several screwdrivers and lock picks. Several items belonging to the owners of the residence were found inside the car Valle used to arrive at the scene. A search of the car also turned up marijuana, methamphetamine and a pipe with burnt marijuana residue.

Valle was arrested and placed in the back of a patrol car. Deputies say while they were still at the scene, Valle bent back the rear partition of the vehicle and took an unlocking tool from the front seat, slid it between the partition and the car frame, used it to roll down the window and escaped while wearing her handcuffs. The entire incident was caught on the car’s dash camera. Damage to the patrol car was estimated at almost $400.

Valle was booked into the Johnson County just after 8pm Tuesday. She’s charged with Escape from Custody, 3rd Degree Burglary, Possession of Burglar’s Tools, 3rd Degree Criminal Mischief, two counts of Possession of a Controlled Substance, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and 5th Degree Theft. If convicted on all charges, Valle faces a maximum of over 16 years in prison.
