A third man has been arrested in response to a large brawl at an Iowa City convenience store.

Iowa City Police say 22-year-old Tanner Helmick of New London was outside the South Riverside Drive Kum & Go just after 2:30am on September 8th when two other subjects began fighting. Helmick, who had been standing off to the side, then allegedly actively engaged in the fight by punching, grabbing and shoving people. One of the men involved fell on the ground, and Helmick allegedly began kicking him while he was down.

The fight was captured on Kum & Go surveillance video.

19-year-old Michael Shoemaker of Erobi Lane in the Modern Manor manufactured housing community was charged in connection with the brawl earlier this week. The ICPD says Shoemaker approached a group of subjects and a brief verbal exchange ensued. Shoemaker then allegedly punched one of the subjects, touching off the brawl.

Police were dispatched to the melee, which reportedly involved at least one person getting hit by a car. Arriving officers noticed a blue Dodge back quickly out of a parking spot and leave at a high rate of speed. The vehicle turned on Orchard Court toward a dead end.

Officers located the vehicle on the dead end. The driver, later identified as 24-year-old Jaden Poole of Burlington, allegedly fled on foot.

Police say Poole returned to the scene a few minutes later. He allegedly showed multiple signs of intoxication and referred to himself as intoxicated. Poole failed field sobriety tests, and registered a blood alcohol concentration of .137 on a Datamatser test.

Poole was charged with Operating While Intoxicated, Public Intoxication, Disorderly Conduct and Driving While Barred. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of over three years in prison.
Helmick and Shoemaker are each also charged with Disorderly Conduct, which carries a maximum sentence of 30 days in jail.

Poole has previous convictions out of Des Moines County, including 2nd Degree Burglary in 2015 and Assault Causing Bodily Injury in 2013.
