A Hy-Vee employee who stole over $12,000 from the business has received a deferred judgement.

39-year-old Barbara Lee Jackson of Riverside was sentenced earlier this week in Johnson County Court. In a plea deal with prosecutors, she agreed to plead guilty to a 2nd Degree Theft charge. She had initially been charged with 1st Degree Theft, a Class C felony punishable by a maximum of ten years in prison.

Iowa City Police say Jackson worked in the Hy-Vee Liquor department on Waterfront Drive when she began falsifying beer keg and tapper return transactions starting on October 20th of last year. Between that date and last March, Jackson failed to tally up over 255 deposit transactions for a total of approximately $12,500. Police say Jackson admitted to committing the thefts, but could not remember an exact number. Hy-Vee loss prevention was able to document many of the thefts.

Keg and tapper deposits at the Waterfront Hy-Vee are $30 and $70, respectively.

Jackson, a resident of the Riverside manufactured housing community on Highway 22, has also agreed to a court-ordered payment plan.
