Coralville man arrested after allegedly stealing truck

A Coralville man was taken into custody after being found in possession of a stolen truck.

According to police, they were dispatched to locate a stolen vehicle that had not yet been entered into the national database, having just been reported stolen by the owner. They came upon 45-year-old Jerimiah Johnson in the 300 block of 2nd Street just after midnight Sunday with the vehicle, a black Dodge 1500 pickup.

The vehicle’s door was reportedly open, with tools used to start the vehicle on the seat, and the ignition was heavily damaged. Upon Miranda questioning, Johnson admitted that he intentionally used a screwdriver to start the truck. The owner of the truck confirmed that Johnson didn’t have permission to drive or have possession of the vehicle.

Johnson, who lives in the 2500 block of Holiday Road, was taken into custody and charged with 2nd Degree Theft, a Class D felony punishable by a prison sentence of up to five years if convicted. He was additionally charged with 5th degree criminal mischief, a simple misdemeanor.
