A Coralville man faces a host of charges after allegedly fleeing a traffic stop over the weekend.

According to police, 29-year-old Calvin Freeman of Holiday Road was observed about 2am Sunday running the stop light at the I380 off ramp at Penn Street. Freeman’s van went eastbound on Penn and was “all over the road.” A stop was attempted but Freeman allegedly refused to stop for the squad car’s lights and sirens, and reportedly swerved at patrol cars with his vehicle as he attempted to elude pursuit.

Freeman exceeded over 25 miles per hour over the posted speed limits during the pursuit, and was only stopped by employing stop sticks. Upon contact, Freeman had a heavy odor of consumed alcohol, slurred his speech and had bloodshot eyes. Partially empty liquor bottles were spotted in the vehicle.

Freeman refused all testing and a check of his driving status came up barred for habitual offender.

During his subsequent arrest, he refused to put his hands behind his back and resisted officers’ attempts to put them there.

Freeman was taken into custody and charged with his third OWI, driving while barred habitual offender, eluding, interference with official acts, and assault with a weapon against peace officers. If convicted on all charges, Freeman could face a prison sentence of up to over 17 years.
