A Coralville man found walking near a wrecked vehicle on the I380 off ramp to I80 West has been charged with his third OWI.

Police discovered 34-year old Antwan Johnson of 3rd Avenue Wednesday night at around 7:20 as the sole person in the vicinity of the wreck, walking along the ramp. His story on who was operating the vehicle at the time of the crash was inconsistent, and a subsequent investigation of the site showed tall grass disturbed only on the driver’s side, and that grass found on the driver’s side floorboard of the vehicle. Johnson himself had muddy shoes and grass and mud on his shirt and in his hair. The key fob to the vehicle was found in Johnson’s pocket.

A check of Johnson’s driving record found at least two previous OWI charges in Johnson County and his driving status as barred until January 2021 as a habitual violator.

Johnson refused all sobriety testing and allegedly admitted to being intoxicated. He also gave written permission for a blood sample.

He was taken into custody and charged with OWI 3rd or subsequent, driving while barred and public intoxication. If convicted on the charges, Johnson could be sentenced to over seven years in prison.
