A student at Tate High School has been charged with having a toy gun on school grounds.

According to a news release from Iowa City Police, officers responded to the school on East Court Street just after 2:15pm Wednesday to investigate a report that a gun was exchanged in the parking lot the day before. According to the principal, a parent reported during a parent-teacher conference that they observed a gun exchange in the parking lot at about 3pm the day prior.

Surveillance video confirmed the parent’s observations of the parties involved, but a gun could not be seen on the video. Subsequent investigation by the ICPD confirmed that a Tate student had possession of a toy gun and was showing it to another student in the parking lot.

The juvenile student was charged with Carrying a Toy Gun in City Limits and was released to their parent.

This is the second such incident at Tate in as many months. On September 18th 19-year-old Jeremiah Neal of Coralville allegedly brought a loaded handgun into the school in is backpack. He’s charged with Carrying a Weapon on School Grounds and Possession of Weapon as a Felon. Both charges are Class D Felonies each punishable by up to five years in prison.
