A trial date has been set for the former director of Hillel House.

29-year-old David Weltman faces a 2nd Degree Sexual Abuse charge after allegedly abusing a nine-year-old boy.

According to police, the boy was taking Hebrew lessons from Weltman at the East Market Street synagogue earlier this year. The boy reported that during a lesson, Weltman picked him up and carried him into another room, where he allegedly proceeded to put his hands inside the boy’s pants, touching his genitals inside his underwear.

Investigators interviewed an ex-acquaintance of Weltman’s, who said he opened up to them and admitted he was attracted to 7-to-12-year-old boys. Weltman allegedly said he hadn’t acted on the impulse, but admitted to watching foreign films with nude children and masturbating to them.

Weltman was initially put on administrative leave and is now no longer associated with Hillel House.

Trial is now set for January 28th. If convicted, Weltman faces a maximum of 25 years in prison.

Weltman is currently living in Skokie, Illinois while he awaits trial. He was also given permission to travel to Florida later this month…a request that went uncontested by prosecutors.

Hillel House serves University of Iowa students, but is not officially affiliated with the school.
