A Coralville man was arrested early Sunday after allegedly choking his live-in girlfriend.

Police were called to the Boston Way residence of 24-year-old Marvin Rodas around 5:15am for the incident, and heard screaming inside the house when they arrived. The woman involved told them that Rodas made sexual advances towards her that she rejected. When she tried to get off the bed, Rodas allegedly made comments about other people touching her and strangled her for five to six seconds.

When the woman was able to get off the bed, Rodas reportedly pulled her hair, and when she got to the stairs, Rodas is accused of pushing her against a wall. When they got down the stairs, the woman wasn’t able to leave, because Rodas allegedly pulled her away from the door and blocked the exit.

Rodas told police that he left after the incident and returned about a half hour later because he was afraid she was going to damage his belongings. He said he was trying to hug her because she was screaming and making obscene comments, and that’s when police arrived.

Rodas was taken into custody and charged with domestic abuse restricting airflow and second offense domestic assault. A no-contact order was requested between the two, who share a minor child together. If convicted on both charges, Rodas could be sentenced to a maximum prison sentence of three years.
