Iowa City Police took an armed man into custody early Saturday morning at the Waterfront Hy-Vee.

29-year-old Jeffrey Naughton of Quincy Road south of Solon was wanted for a domestic abuse incident last month. Police say Naughton hit the alleged victim four times in the face with an open hand while they were driving near Highway 6 and Heinz Road just before 4pm on October 21st. He then allegedly pulled the woman out of the car, causing a cut to her hand. Naughton allegedly broke the woman’s phone when she tried to call the police, but she was able to run to nearby Knutson Construction on Scott Boulevard and use their phone to call 9-1-1.

The woman had bruises as a result of the incident and another earlier incident involving Naughton.

Naughton was arrested just after 3:30 Saturday morning at the Waterfront Hy-Vee after a report of a woman trying to avoid a male. A search of his person turned up a stiletto knife concealed in his coat pocket.

Naughton is charged with Carrying Weapons, Domestic Abuse Assault Causing Injury and Obstructing Emergency Communications. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of over three years in prison.
