The man accused of stabbing his wife, a University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics budget executive, allegedly over his mismanagement of the woman’s money, has pleaded not guilty.

67-year-old Roy Carl Browning Jr. filed a written plea Tuesday in Johnson County District Court.

A months-long investigation led authorities to arrest Browning in October for the April 5th death of JoEllen Browning at their Green Mountain Drive home.

The cause of death was determined to be “sharp force injuries,” and the death was ruled a homicide.

Ms. Browning noticed discrepancies in the couple’s bank accounts, and emailed Browning on April 1st. She scheduled a meeting with their financial institution on April 5th and informed Roy Browning of the meeting the afternoon before.

The investigation alleges that after Mr. Browning acknowledged JoEllen’s text, he purchased rubber-palmed gloves and a package of towels from a paint supply store, and was also given several pair of latex gloves. Those items have yet to be recovered by police.

At the meeting, which never occurred, representatives were going to tell Ms. Browning that one of their savings accounts had been depleted. Additionally, an account JoEllen thought was active never existed, and Roy had taken out high-interest loans.

A trial date has yet to be set.
