Former West High, City High principals die

Longtime principals and both West High and City High have died.

Ed Barker, the first principal in West High history, died early Friday morning of natural causes. He was 91.

Barker’s family says he was able to spend one final Thanksgiving with them before he died. The Korean War vet became West High’s first principal when the school opened in 1968. He retired 11 years later.

Services are pending.

Longtime City High principal Howard Vernon died Thursday in his home at the age of 84.

Vernon was named City High’s principal in 1979 and would serve in that position for 16 years. In 2013, the school unveiled a sculpture in the former administrator’s honor.

A gathering to celebrate Vernon’s life will be held Tuesday, December 3, 2019 from 4:00 until 6:00 PM at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Avenue, Iowa City. A reception will follow at The Kirkwood Room, 515 Kirkwood Avenue until 8:00 PM.
