Iowa City Police arrested an armed Cedar Rapids man on The Ped Mall early Sunday morning.
According to arrest records, 20-year-old Zion Johnson of 8th Avenue SW was denied entry to a bar just before midnight because he was carrying an open container of alcohol. When officers stopped Johnson a short time later, he admitted that the cup contained liquor, and denied having an ID on his person.
Police say Johnson attempted to run when officers tried putting him in handcuffs. He allegedly fought with officers and was caught after a brief foot chase.
A loaded Taurus 9mm handgun was found in Johnson’s pants. He’s 20 years old and does not have a permit to carry. Johnson claimed the gun belongs to his cousin, who gave it to him between 9 and 10pm in the alley next to The Fieldhouse because he didn’t want to carry it downtown.
Johnson was also allegedly found in possession of a THC vape pen, marijuana and another person’s ID. He showed multiple signs of intoxication, had bar wristbands, and admitted to drinking and taking Xanax about three hours earlier. Johnson does not have a prescription for the Xanax.
Johnson is charged with Carrying Weapons, Carrying Weapons While Intoxicated, Prohibited Acquisition of a Pistol or Revolver, Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations, Interference with Official Acts with a Firearm, Possession of a Controlled Substance, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Open Container, Possession of Alcohol Under the Legal Age, Unlawful Use of a Driver’s License, Under Legal Age in a Bar, and Public Intoxication. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of over 13 years in prison.
