The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints says a 66-year-old man killed in an auto accident involving an Iowa City man was serving a mission for the church.

The Iowa State Patrol says Craig Meyocks of Dammeron Valley, Utah died at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics following the Christmas night accident. He was one of three people injured just before 6:15 Wednesday night near Olds. The State Patrol says 65-year-old Robert Lee Sykes II of Iowa City was driving westbound in the School Avenue crossover on Highway 218 when he crossed the southbound lanes and was broadsided by a southbound vehicle being driven by Meyocks.
Sykes’ Chrysler Pacifica came to rest in the southbound lanes of Highway 218, while Meyocks’ Buick Encore came to rest in the west ditch.
Sykes’ son, 46-year-old Robert Lee Sykes III, also of Iowa City, was airlifted to the UIHC. Meyocks and 64-year-old Brenda Meyocks were transported to the facility by ambulance. Church spokesman Daniel Woodruff says the couple had been serving as senior missionaries in the Illinois Nauvoo mission since March 2019.

Sykes’ and Brenda Meyocks’ conditions have not been released.

The accident remains under investigation. Charges are pending.
