Fleeing the scene of a multiple car accident during Friday night’s snowstorm has led to multiple charges against a Kalona man.

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office says 26-year-old Jacob Ray of B Avenue was driving southbound on Highway 1 just after 10:15pm when he tried to pass two vehicles and a tow truck near 540th Street. The road was covered in snow and a mix of sleet and freezing rain was falling. Ray lost control, and his Mazda B3000 crashed into the middle vehicle, sending it into the ditch.

Deputies say Ray fled the scene before they could arrive, and he failed to see if the driver he hit was okay. Multiple witnesses identified him as the driver and cause of the accident.

Ray was later found with his car’s key in his pocket. Investigators say he showed signs of intoxication and refused all field sobriety and breath testing.

Ray was arrested and charged while Operating While Intoxicated – 2nd Offense, Reckless Driving, Leaving the Scene of a Property Damage Accident and Driving While Barred. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of four years in prison.
