An Iowa City man who failed to show up for his trial twice has been arrested.

According to police, now 19-year-old Anthony Allen Smith of Westwinds Drive was the subject of a police call on August 22nd at 12:10pm. They were called to the residence as Smith reportedly needed an ambulance because he was high and had just been in a fight.

Authorities alleged that Smith told them he was mad after the fight, and fired his brother’s BB gun into a nearby mirror in the living room, and had fired 32 BBs at the mirror.

Smith was cited for prohibited discharge of toy guns, a simple misdemeanor, and ordered to appear at the Courthouse on September 12th. A non-jury trial was scheduled for October 29th, but court records show that he failed to appear.

A warrant was issued for Smith’s arrest because of violating his probation conditions on a 1st degree burglary and assault charge from April 16th of 2019. In that instance, Smith confronted a man about taking his food from the common kitchen area of their South Lucas Street apartment. He barged into the man’s apartment and shoved him to the ground, causing scrapes and cuts to the man’s arm and elbow.

He was picked up on November 5th and in a subsequent hearing, another non-jury trial date was set for January 21st on the prohibited discharge count.

This January 4th, Iowa City police again charged Smith, this time for carrying a toy gun where prohibited. He was observed with a handgun in his waistband at Harbor Freight on Highway 1. Officers stopped Smith, who allegedly admitted to having a BB gun tucked into his waistband on his right hip, and another in the front pocket of his sweatshirt.  He once again failed to appear, and another warrant was issued.

Smith was booked at the Johnson County Jail Thursday morning and now faces up to 25 years in prison on the burglary charge.
