A passenger in an Iowa City traffic stop faces charges that he threatened the family of a police officer.

Online records show Iowa City Police arrested 21-year-old Timothy Kelly of Sugar Pine Drive Northeast in Cedar Rapids on an Operating While Intoxicated charge just after 2:15am Saturday on Gilbert Street between Burlington and College Streets. A passenger in Kelly’s vehicle, identified as 22-year-old Trevor Thulin of Eastland Drive Southeast in Cedar Rapids, allegedly ignored officers’ commands to come to the back of the vehicle while a search was conducted. Police say Thulin had to be told multiple times not to put his hands in his pockets while he was being searched.

Thulin allegedly showed multiple signs of intoxication. Police say he ignored officers’ commands to walk to the back of the squad car, instead walking toward another officer’s investigation. Thulin also allegedly began pulling away from officers as he was being physically escorted to the back of the car.

Once in the back of the squad car, Thulin allegedly made various threats and comments to officers, including saying he knew one officer’s brother and that he would be dead next week.

Thulin is charged with 1st Degree Harassment and Interference With Official Acts. If convicted on both counts, he faces a maximum of 25 months in prison.
