IC man arrested after alleged gun theft
An Iowa City man is accused of stealing a handgun from an apartment he entered tin his job as a maintenance person.
According to police, 56-year old Juan Rocha-Castro of Iowa Avenue entered an apartment in the 500 block of South Johnson Street Wednesday afternoon in his job as a maintenance person, checking smoke alarms and other items. Surveillance video allegedly shows Rocha-Castro entering a bedroom and taking a Glock 19 handgun from a nightstand.
Rocha-Castro was shown the video and post-Miranda, admitted that he had the gun at his residence and allowed officers into his apartment to recover the firearm. He reportedly stated that it was the first time he had taken property on the job.
Rocha-Castro reportedly had a fake ID on him and gave the officer another fake name when asked. Police report he finally gave his real name when admitted into the Johnson County Jail.
A check of court records showed that Rocha-Castro had an outstanding warrant from 2007 for failing to appear at a pre-trial conference on a controlled substance violation from March of that year. He also had an outstanding warrant from a second offense OWI in October 2006.
Rocha-Castro has been charged with 4th degree theft, a serious misdemeanor, and providing false ID information, a simple misdemeanor. With the outstanding warrants, he faces a total of over thirteen years in prison if convicted.
He is being held at the Johnson County Jail at the request of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
