An Iowa City man with a long history of driving and drug possession charges was arrested early Saturday morning after a traffic stop found him holding marijuana.

Police say an officer was pulling into the Penn Oaks parking lot at approximately 2am, just as 29-year-old Martarius Junious of Whispering Meadow Drive was pulling out. As the officer was turning around in the lot to exit, he says that he had no intention of taking any enforcement action against Junious, but he allegedly fled the area at a very high speed.

Police didn’t locate him at first, but were able to find him in the back of a parking lot near the area with his lights off.

Upon contact, Junious allegedly had a strong odor of marijuana about his person, and approximately two grams of the drug was found in his pocket.

The arrest report notes that Junious was convicted of a controlled substance violation back in 2011 and had several other arrests of that nature. A check of court records also shows that Junious has several charges of driving while barred as a habitual offender.

He was arrested for driving while barred and drug possession. If convicted on both counts, Junious could be sentenced to up to seven years in prison.
