Cedar Rapids Transit has announced that they will suspend fixed-route transit services starting Wednesday.
In a release issued Monday, City Manager Jeff Pomeranz said the decision to suspend service was a difficult one, but one that the city felt must be made to prevent a possible spike in the number of cases that could overwhelm medical facilities. Although they’ve gone to extra efforts to clean and sanitize the buses, they still are confined spaces that are populated by many people throughout the day.
Neighborhood Transportation Service is expanding their after-hours service to give rides to those providing critical needs, such as those that work at hospitals, grocery stores, care facilities and convenience/gas stations. Their number is 363-1321 and rides need to be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance.
Linn County LIFTS will continue to provide service to existing customers.
Fares for both providers are waived until further notice; City Transit service is tentatively scheduled to resume on April 13th.
