Driving a vehicle with two different license plates has led to the arrest of an Iowa City man on theft charges.
Police say 27-year-old Davonte Coleman of the Town and Campus Apartments on Arthur Street was observed at around 3:45am Monday operating a 2005 Cadillac DeVille bearing a front license plate starting with HQU. However, the rear plate started with HYE.
A check of the plates showed that the front plate matched a vehicle that had been reported stolen out of Iowa City.
Police stopped Coleman at the Kum & Go on 2nd Street in Coralville, and a check of the Vehicle Identification Number allegedly confirmed the vehicle to be the one reported stolen. Coleman was then removed from the vehicle.
A check of Coleman’s records showed his driving status to be barred until November of 2021 as a habitual offender with 15 withdrawals in effect.
He was charged with 2nd degree theft, a Class D Felony, and Driving while Barred as a Habitual Offender, an aggravated misdemeanor. If convicted, Coleman could be sentenced to up to seven years in prison.
