The Iowa Department of Education has announced that the United States Department of Agriculture is providing a waiver that allows some leeway when it comes to getting meals from the Summer Food Service Program during the COVID-19 outbreak.
Original requirements were that a student had to be present to get a meal, but parents and caregivers can now just share the school name where each child attends, and if they are of school age.
The waiver applies to both the Iowa City Community School District and the Cedar Rapids School District.
In Iowa City, pickup times are between 11am and 1pm Monday through Friday; children and students are provided a lunch and breakfast for the next day. Pickup locations include City High, Hills Elementary, North Central Junior High, Northwest Junior High, Twain Elementary, West High, Wood Elementary, and the Breckenridge, Cole/Thatcher, Lake Ridge and Regency mobile home parks.
In Cedar Rapids, their pickup times are 10:30am to 1pm at Arthur, Grant, Grant Wood, Hoover, Johnson, Nixon, Taylor and Wright Elementaries, and Roosevelt Middle School.
The change is effective immediately.
If you’re unable to pick up meals during those times, contact the United Way of Johnson County at www.unitedwayjwc.org or call 338-7822; the United Way of East Central Iowa website is www.uweci.org or call 398-5372.
