Drinking and smoking marijuana apparently didn’t help a Waterloo man with his sense of direction…or judgement…after he tried walking from North Liberty to Cedar Rapids in the middle of the night while going the wrong way.

North Liberty Police received a call from a concerned motorist about a man walking southbound along Interstate 380 just after 1:30am Sunday. Officers made contact with 33-year-old Zachary Martin near the 2 mile marker. Police say he showed multiple signs of intoxication and admitted to drinking.

Martin claimed he was walking from North Liberty to Cedar Rapids, even though he had walked two miles south from the Penn Street exit in the opposite direction from Cedar Rapids.

Martin was arrested for Public Intoxication. He allegedly admitted to having marijuana in his bag, and a search turned up marijuana and a marijuana pipe.

Martin is additionally charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. If convicted on all three charges, he faces a maximum of 14 months in jail.
