The University of Iowa is calming the fears of its employees by letting them know they will be paid through the end of the semester.

The UI has issued a statement saying many employees, especially students, may be concerned about their pay status as the campus is almost completely shut down during the COVID-19 pandemic. The news release says that in accordance with state and federal law (including recent federal acts) and the direction of the Board of Regents, the UI will keep all employees in paid status through the end of the spring 2020 semester, regardless of funding source.

Specifically, members of the regular faculty or staff will continue to be paid as normal. Employees with a fixed term of employment, such as a resident assistant, will continue to be paid as normal through the end of the term of their employment.

And hourly employees who are paid bi-weekly, including student employees, and are unable to work because of the public health emergency, will be paid for up to 80 hours of time based on the hours they would have expected to work this semester.

Federal work-study will continue to be paid, in keeping with Federal Work Study Electronic Guidance.

Those UI employees who are unable to work because they are sick, are caring for a loved one, or because of other complications due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will receive additional paid leave, and their jobs will be protected until they return.
