Two teenage boys who allegedly stole a minivan over the weekend were arrested by Cedar Rapids police Tuesday after a high-speed chase reaching speeds of 100 miles per hour.
According to the CRPD, officers spotted the vehicle, reported stolen sometime between late Saturday night and early Sunday morning, in the 6400 block of Cimarron Drive Northeast at around 1am and attempted to stop it. The teens headed to Intestate 380, and drove south, getting off at Kirkwood Boulevard and eventually crashing the 2009 Toyota Sienna into a manufactured home at Kirkwood Estates Mobile Home Park.
The two teens took off on foot and crossed a small creek behind the mobile home.
One of the boys was caught in the 400 block of Drake Street Southwest, while they found the other boy in a retention pond south of Kirkwood Estates. The 17-year-old refused to leave the water and swam out of reach of officers for about ten minutes before being apprehended. Because he was in the cold water for so long, he was taken to a hospital for evaluation before being taken to the Linn County Juvenile Detention Center.
The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports that the 17-year-old, who was driving, faces charges of interference with official acts, second-degree theft, attempt to elude, hit and run and multiple traffic offenses. The second teen — a 16-year old boy — faces charges of interference with official acts and second-degree theft.
