The number of initial claims for unemployment in the state of Iowa last week were higher than the number of continuing weekly unemployment claims.
Iowa Workforce Development reports a total of 58,453 new claims, compared to 54,461 continuing claims.
Accomodation and Food Service accounted for a third of all claims, followed by Health Care and Social Assistance, Manufacturing, Retail Trade and Other Services. The majority of the claims are COVID-19 related.
IWD says they’re getting an unprecedented amount of calls with wait times of 15 minutes or longer, but say they’re answering about 80 percent of incoming calls.
