The current economic crisis created by the COVID-19 pandemic has taken a toll on the supplies at local food banks. But one Eastern Iowa restaurant chain is doing their part to help restock the shelves.

Last Monday and Tuesday local Zio Johno’s locations gave customers a free spaghetti or gondola sub lunch in exchange for donating two or more canned food items. On Friday the restaurant chain announced it had handed out over 2,000 free meals worth an estimated $10,000 while collecting over 5,000 canned food items during its food drive.

All of the items have been donated to food banks in Iowa City, North Liberty, Cedar Rapids and Marion.
