A Cedar Rapids man was taken into custody early Thursday after allegedly leading police on a high-speed chase that began in North Liberty.
Arrest reports indicate that 24-year-old Elijah Hayes of 29th Avenue Southwest was stopped by North Liberty police at around 12:15am, but allegedly fled the scene. Hayes was located at the intersection of I-380 and 120th street in Swisher, reportedly driving at a high rate of speed and not following traffic control devices.
A sheriff’s deputy turned on his vehicle’s lights and siren and followed the vehicle, tracking it at about 110 miles per hour as Hayes allegedly continued to flee.
The chase ended when Hayes lost control of his Chevrolet HHR on a gravel road and crashed. A passenger in his vehicle complained of pain and bruising on her leg, and a small cut above her right eye.
When asked for identification, Hayes allegedly provided deputies with the name Kevionn M. Patrick, which was false.
Hayes was charged with felony Eluding and providing False Identification information. If convicted, he could be sentenced to over five years in prison.
