An Iowa City man who was served with a no-contact order at the beginning of the month violated it twice on Monday, according to police.
The first incident was reported at 4:20pm, when 44-year-old Demetrius Jones of Shelter House is accused of calling the protected party multiple times through a restricted number. The woman had voice mail recordings of when she didn’t answer the phone, and they included Jones allegedly making threats toward her, stating that he was going to shoot her and then kill himself. He also reportedly stated that he knew what color shirt she was wearing and should not go home because he would be shooting.
While an officer was talking with the protected party, Jones is accused of calling her again. The woman stated that the threats put her in fear for her life, and believed that Jones would indeed kill her.
At 10:30 the same night, the protected party told police that she saw Jones near her residence at the Town and Campus Apartments. He allegedly called her again, stating that he had a gun, but was going to put it away and not use it on her. Arriving officers saw Jones running from the scene and was found in a nearby park.
When asked to show officers his hands, Jones only complied after multiple requests to do so. He also reportedly smelled of ingested alcohol and stated that he was drunk.
Jones was trespassed from the property on Febraury 16th, and the no contact order was granted on April 2nd.
He was taken into custody and charged with 1st degree Harassment, 3rd degree Harassment, Interference with Official Acts, two counts of Violation of No Contact order, and trespass. If convicted on the charges, Jones could be sentenced to over two years in prison.
