A Cedar Rapids man was taken into custody after allegedly stealing a woman’s car.
According to police, 26-year-old Quade Ballard of Sunshine Street Southwest and his passenger, the owner of the vehicle, were on the Coralville strip at 10th Avenue Thursday afternoon around 3:35. Ballard allegedly began to drive recklessly, which prompted the woman to tell him to get out of the driver’s seat and let her drive.
As she exited the car to get into the driver’s seat, Ballard made an illegal turn and reportedly sped off.
When police arrived, the woman made a phone call to Ballard, who allegedly told her that he threw the car keys in the river and destroyed her car, adding that she was never going to get it back.
The vehicle was recovered later in the area, but the keys were not.
Ballard was taken into custody and charged with 2nd degree theft, a Class D Felony punishable by a sentence of up to five years in prison. A no-contact order was requested between the two parties.
