A Coralville man was taken into custody after allegedly assaulting a woman in a vehicle.
Police say the incident occurred Friday afternoon at 1:30 outside the Fresh Feel Fade Salon on First Avenue in Iowa City. Police received several calls about a man assaulting a woman in a blue car at that location.
Witnesses stated that 21-year-old Alvin Abbott of Holiday Road was outside the vehicle punching the woman, and when she tried to roll up the window, he broke the window out and grabbed her by the throat. Abbott then allegedly pushed the woman into the passenger seat, got in and took off driving the car.
Police say seconds later, they received reports of a crash on Hollywood Boulevard. Witnesses there said that a blue car came around the corner “way too fast,” left the roadway and hit a tree. Abbott then got out of the car, attempted to open the passenger door, argued with the woman, then walked away from the incident.
The occupants of the vehicle were identified as the same two at the salon earlier, and their toddler child.
Police report the woman suffered bruising to her face and neck and acknowledged that Abbott was the baby’s father and had broken out the driver’s side window. She also alleged that when Abbott took off from the salon, the toddler was unsecured and ended up on the floor of the vehicle as a result of the crash.
Abbott has a prior domestic abuse conviction from December of 2018. He was charged with his second offense, as well as domestic abuse assault impeding airflow and child endangerment. If convicted on all counts, Abbott could be sentenced to up to six years in prison.
A no-contact order was requested between the two parties.
