IC man charged with assaulting partner of 30 years

An Iowa City man who has been together with a woman for 30 years was arrested Friday night after an alleged assault involving knife.
According to police, 62-year-old Johnnie Roberts of East Davenport Street and a woman got into an argument at approximately 7pm Friday that their adult daughter could hear from downstairs. There were reports of pots and pans being thrown to the ground.
The woman retreated to her bedroom, which is separate from Roberts’. Roberts reportedly retrieved a knife and opened the locked door. He proceeded to yell at the woman to get out of his house while the knife was still in his hand.
The woman reported being in fear for her life and stated that the knife was pointed in her direction.
The two have 8 children together.
Roberts was taken into custody and charged with domestic abuse assault second offense, and domestic abuse assault with the display or use of a weapon, both aggravated misdemeanors. If convicted on both counts, Roberts could be sentenced to up to four years in prison.
