CR Police arrest suspects in two robberies Sunday morning

Cedar Rapids Police arrested two suspects Sunday morning in two separate robbery incidents.

The first occurred at around 6:30am at the DoubleTree by Hilton on 1st Avenue Northeast, when a man forced entry into the employee entrance of the hotel while allegedly displaying what appeared to be a handgun. He was identified as 41-year-old Juvernal Habyariman. He said he wanted the manager, but an employee was able to contact police. Officers arrived on scene and took Habyariman into custody.

He’s been charged with first degree robbery and possession of a controlled substance, and could be sentenced to up to 26 years in prison if convicted. No injuries were reported in the incident, and the weapon was later determined to be a replica handgun.

Then just after 7:20am, a 45-year-old woman reported that a man displayed a box cutter while she was stopped at a red light near 13th Street and 1st Avenue East. He opened the woman’s car door, got in, and made her drive to the FasFuel in the 1400 block of 1st Avenue Southeast.

The woman had cash taken by the suspect, but was able to escape safely and call police. They arrived on scene and arrested the man, later identified as 32-year-old Shevonald Lee Gibbs.

Gibbs has been charged with first degree Robbery, and could be sentenced to 25 years in prison if convicted. No injuries were sustained in the incident.
