Iowa City Regina’s opener with Dyersville Beckman has been cancelled due to coronavirus infections among the Beckman team.

The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports that a player and coach have tested positive, and contact tracing means 11 other players have to be quarantined.

Beckman Vice Principal and Activities Director Todd Troutman told the paper that a coach took five kids to Cedar Rapids on Sunday August 16th to help with storm cleanup. The coach started feeling bad that Tuesday and tested positive, putting the kids who traveled with him in quarantine. A student wasn’t feeling well on the first day of classes Thursday, and he tested positive. Contract tracing took out other players, leaving the team without enough bodies to field a team for this Friday’s football game.

The Beckman team hopes to play its September 4 game against Animosa, but Troutman calls that situation “fluid.”
