Citing the increase in COVID-19 positivity rates in Johnson County and the city specifically, the Iowa City Community School District requested, and got, permission from the state to start the school year 100 percent off-site.

In a letter to families and staff, the request was submitted Wednesday, and the state responded favorably by that evening. The district has had previous requests rejected by the state Board of Education.

The Board of Directors will discuss the recent developments and determine the next steps at a special Saturday meeting. The letter stresses that they have made no decision to change the start of the school year from its planned September 8th date.

Additional information about athletics and activities will be provided to families and staff no later than Friday afternoon. High school football is set to begin Friday night.
