A Wapello man has been charged with stealing tens of thousands of dollars from an Iowa City business.

Authorities met with the owner of United Auto Glass in April of last year at the owner’s request. He explained his business and shared records explaining his allegations.

According to the owner, 29-year-old Justin Wehmeyer of Water Street in Wapello was installing windshields paid for by United Auto Glass, but keeping the money paid for services for himself.

A subsequent investigation reviewing bank account records from Wehmeyer’s bank reportedly made it clear that he was depositing checks intended for the business into his own personal checking account. They also allegedly found ATM cash deposits and electronic deposits through Square.

According to the owner, Wehmeyer took over $70,000 from United Auto Glass for a period starting in August of 2018, through July of 2019.

Wehmeyer allegedly agreed to meet with an investigator about the charges, and was supposed to let them know when, but reportedly never did.

A warrant was requested in June of this year; Wehmeyer’s been charged with 1st degree Theft, a Class C felony punishable by a prison sentence of up to ten years if convicted.
