The Iowa City City Council is once again expected to consider the creation of a Truth and Reconciliation Commission at tonight’s meeting.

The Commission was one of the primary demands by the Iowa Freedom Riders to improve on systemic inequalities in the community. Earlier this month group organizer Raneem Hamad proposed new amendments, one of which is that the commission run independent of the city council.

Councilors Laura Bergus and Janice Weiner drafted the framework for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and remain committed to forming the commission by October 1st. But Bergus said they need to consider the new amendments beforehand.

This will be the fourth time the creation of the commission will have come before the council.

Tonight’s meeting is set for 7pm with a 5pm work session. Both can be seen on the city’s YouTube channel, the city’s Facebook page and on City Channel 4.
