Members of the University of Iowa women’s swimming and diving team are challenging the school’s announcement that their sports will be eliminated at the end of this academic year.

A complaint filed Friday morning in the Federal District Court, Southern District of Iowa, is citing Title IX of the federal Education Amendments of 1972.

According to the team’s attorney Jim Larew, Christina Kaufman, Sage Ohlensehlen, Alexa Puccini, and Kelsey Drake contend that the elimination of women’s swimming and diving violates their rights, and the rights of other student-athletes similarly situated, under that law.

The swimmers’ suit is the latest in a series of moves from athletes, alumni, and parents to save the four UI sports that are to be discontinued at the end of the academic year.
