Crashing his car into a North Liberty Police squad car while allegedly drunk has led to a University of Northern Iowa student’s arrest.

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office says a North Liberty Police officer was investigating a car crash on northbound Interstate 380 just north of the Penn Street exit just after 1am Sunday when his vehicle was rear-ended. The officer was parked in the median and had his emergency lights activated.

The other vehicle came to rest in the ditch. The driver, identified as 21-year-old Shawn Burrage, a UNI student from DeWitt, allegedly showed signs of intoxication, did poorly on field sobriety tests, and registered a blood alcohol content of .189% at the scene. He scored a .136% on a later Datamaster test.

Burrage was arrested and charged with Operating While Intoxicated.

(An earlier version of this story misidentified the vehicle as a Johnson County Sheriff’s Office squad car.)
