A Chicago man faces multiple charges after allegedly leaving the scene of an accident and leading police on a high-speed chase on Interstate 80.

Arrest reports indicate the incident occurred around 3pm Sunday on the westbound portion of the interstate. Cedar County put out a broadcast on the driver of a black sedan that had been involved in a hit and run incident heading west. A State Patrol officer spotted the vehicle while patrolling the area from an aircraft, traveling at a high rate of speed.

It’s alleged that the driver, 29-year-old Isaiah Johnson of South Shore Drive in Chicago, was clocked consistently going over 100 miles an hour, including 112 miles an hour in a 70 miles per hour zone and 120 miles an hour in a 65 mile an hour zone. Johnson also reportedly was going over 100 miles an hour through a construction zone.

Johnson reportedly followed too close to a semi near the 235 mile marker and struck the trailer, causing both vehicles to pull over. Johnson was outside the car when authorities caught up to him and arrested him. He was taken to the Coralville PD, where signs of impairment were allegedly observed. A preliminary test showed a blood-alcohol level of .206 percent, with a subsequent Datamaster test showing .163 percent.

A search of Johnson’s car found a personal amount of marijuana on the passenger floorboard, along with an open container of alcohol and a grinder. A loaded handgun was also reportedly located, though Johnson does not have a permit to carry through his home state.

Johnson has been initially charged with Dominion or Control of a Firearm as a Felon, first offense OWI, marijuana possession, and possession of drug paraphernalia. If convicted on those counts, Johnson could be sentenced to over seven years in prison.
